Starting in 2024, Korea will participate in the Global Antibiotic Usage Monitoring System (GLASS-AMC) organized by the World Health Organization (WHO). This participation marks an important milestone in participating in international efforts to solve antibiotic resistance problems, and the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Korea Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service are realizing this through cooperation.

WHO's International Antibiotic Monitoring System
The World Health Organization (WHO) has established the **Resistant Bacterial Monitoring System (operating since 2015)** and the **Antibiotic Usage Monitoring System (operating from 2020)** to help member countries manage antibiotic resistance more effectively. The monitoring system tracks each country's antibiotic usage and the current status of pathogens' resistance, providing essential data for addressing antibiotic resistance issues.

The WHO's anti-bacterial monitoring system involves 111 countries, and 36 countries are currently participating in the antibiotic usage monitoring system. This system can track each country's antibiotic usage patterns and resistance status by comparing the amount of antibiotics used per 1,000 people per day in each country.

Korea's Participation and Significance
Korea's participation in the surveillance system is an important step in contributing to international efforts to overcome antibiotic resistance. "This participation in the surveillance system is of great significance in that it joins efforts to overcome international antibiotic resistance," said Ji Young-mi, director of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In addition, Korea plans to actively participate in international cooperation to strengthen its capacity to monitor antibiotic resistance through the **ODA**.

Role of Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service
Kang Jung-gu, director of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, said that through the nation's national claims data held by Korea, it will provide accurate data on the country's antibiotic usage and contribute to strengthening the internationally standardized antibiotic resistance monitoring system. The data includes usage information by antibiotic type and dosing method based on the health insurance claims data for 2021 and will be reflected in the WHO's 2024 report.

adverse effects of antibiotic use
Antibiotics are essential medicines for the treatment of infectious diseases, but their use comes with several side effects and risks.

Antibiotic Resistance: Overuse or misuse of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance, a phenomenon in which pathogens become resistant to them. Resistant bacteria do not respond to conventional antibiotics, making them difficult to treat and requiring stronger antibiotics.

Digestive side effects: Antibiotics can also kill beneficial bacteria in the intestines, causing side effects in the digestive system such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and changes in intestinal balance.

Allergic Reaction: Some people may have an allergic reaction to antibiotics. Symptoms may include hives, rashes, and shortness of breath.

Toxic response: When used in high doses or for a long time, antibiotics can have toxic effects on organs such as liver and kidney.

Other Side Effects: Antibiotics can sometimes cause side effects such as skin rashes, fevers, and vomiting, and can be dangerous, especially for people with weak immune systems.
